Structure and task manuals

Body rappel (also and originally known as a Dülfersitz rappel, figure 2-6 from U.S. Army Training Circular TC 21-24 Rappelling (JULY 2008).

Context

These notes relate to my 2015 article for KCET's Artbound, "Machines for Training: Military Performance and Embodied Knowledge". I'm thinking of some kind of follow up piece that looks at the architecture of training structures, and I'm thinking that one way into that piece might be to focus on the structures themselves. As a part of this I am compiling manuals and job guides for using these structures. I actually had collected these and a number of other rappelling manuals for another project, but they seem to go here.

One of the things that I find interesting is that these training structures, unlike most other kinds of structures that I can think oh, have operating manuals, as thought they were machines. In my Artbound piece I mention Le Corbusier's famous dictum that "a house is a machine for living," but even if this is true these machines rarely come with operating manuals. Instead their forms dictate function. The "Frankfurt kitchen", developed in the 1930s, is an example that comes to mind. It's structure dictated a certain kind of cooking practice, but this was a practice that the homemaker had to intuit from her cooking knowledge and her interpretation of what the space meant based on that knowledge.

Not so training structures, which have defined procedures that are captured in manuals and other policy documents.
